They used to hiss when I would play Prince's 1999 album when I was a teenager. Now of course they're all impressed because Prince became a witness and rewrote all his risque songs.

They especially honed in on and got all excited over the subheading "Carey Preaches Bible Truth."
I pointed out that several religions "in Christendom" (using terminology that makes them comfortable) have said similar things concerning Revelations and that many Christian religions recognize that holidays like Easter and Christmas have pagan origins. I also suggested that they not get so excited over stuff like this without investigating it throughly.
But to their eager JW minds, this hinted that Drew Carey has "been witnessed to."
They claim that a friend of theirs has an mp3 of Drew Carey speaking all of this at the White House.

My Older Witness Mom Admits to me - "It's a Man's Organization "
by flipper ini was having a normal conversation with my witness mom 81 years old ( a witness for 57 years ) and the subject came up about my 56 year old sister who recently suffered a stroke in february .
my sister suffered for years with post-traumatic stress syndrome from an extremely abusive jw husband throughout the 1980's.
she was beaten, raped forcibly by him, and emotionally abused by his drug induced screaming rants, and to top that off; cheated on her constantly- even with sisters in the congregation.

There is a woman I grew up with who married an abusive man (also a JW). I guess he beat the crap out of her on a regular basis. Her whole family is JW as is his.
First she went to her parents for advice. Her father's an elder. They both told her to go back and "work it out." That she has her kids to think of and how Jehovah hates divorce, blah blah blah.
When it continued, her father told her to go to her congregation's elders. They asked the husband who initially denied it, then said he was sorry. Technically he lied to the elders by denying it. Anyway, the elders told her that he's sorry and that they should work it out. From then on, they treated her as a typical "hysterical and melodramic "female."
I guess one night he beat her so bad that she had to run. It was only when her parents saw how badly she was beaten that they told her they would support her decision.
So yeah, the general consensus of the elders was just to work it out.
Sadder part was that this woman was so messed up emotionally that in a moment of weakness that she very much regretted, she had a one night stand with someone she worked with. Even though she was repentant, she was disfellowshiped.
The abusive ex-husband gloated about it to their children, bragging that he was now scripturally free to remarry because their mom was "an adultress."
The woman was reinstated later. I can't believe she came back after all that. But now she's remarried to another JW. This one seems to treat her very well though.

Women being in subjection...a sore subject
by milligal ini was raised jw and of course the whole theory that a man is the head and the woman must respect her husband and be in subjection to his authority was ingrained in me from a young age.
my mother, (oddly enough) chose the jw religion, dragged my father in kicking and screaming (he later served as an elder for 17 years) and she complained constantly about men being in control and her pains as a woman in subjection.
now, i already have a good idea about my mother's problems.

At the risk of sounding offensive, I don't believe that one human being holds power over another, outside of social boundaries that must be in place for an organized society (if you murder someone you have to go to jail, the police hold that authority so we can have a peaceful existence etc. ) and I do not believe that having a penis (can I say penis here?) enables you to somehow have more knowledge and expertise than someone who has a vagina (there it is again...those awkward words...).
Why is that offensive?
This is a huge soapbox for me too. And I too wonder how the hell can any self-respecting woman enter, or stay in, a religion where she is considered less than a man. This goes for Judiasm and Islam too.

every single jw relative i've had who has passed away, had an infomercial funeral.
hardly anything was ever said about them as people, except of course in how they served the borg.. "sister x was a very pugnatious woman, even into her late 80's, as i'm sure her family can attest to.

My heart goes out to you, Buckster. This damned religion damages and destroys so many people. Further evidence is how their adherents behave during sensitive times such as funerals.
When one of my grandfathers (a JW) passed away, the brother giving the eulogy said that he (my grandfather) "wasn't as important as the work he did" (meaning his life as a JW). I was sitting in the second row and gave him such a angry look that he started stammering and desperatly tried to backpeddle.
He avoided me like the plague afterwards.

One of the more asinine practices of JWs is to turn someone's funeral into a Borg infomercial. Every single JW relative I've had who has passed away, had an infomercial funeral. Hardly anything was ever said about them as people, except of course in how they served the Borg.
"Sister X was a very pugnatious woman, even into her late 80's, as I'm sure her family can attest to. It was her indomitable spirit that propelled her in the field ministry."
"Brother J would not want you to be sad right now. No, he would want you to look forward to seeing him again in the New Order and to keep faithful."
"Sister P was a lifelong, faithful witness of Jehovah!"
I hate this habit and practice. A funeral isn't for the benefit of the dead, but a chance for friends and family to gather and say goodbye and celebrate their life. Maybe we wanted to hear amusing little stories from their lives. Maybe we wanted to appreciate them as people.
But no. Their funerals were/are made into a field service call on a captive audience. What if the deceased had unbelieving relatives? I know in some cases in my family, the unbelieving relatives sat quietly at the back of the funeral home and looked very sad and resigned and disgusted at the behavior of all the JWs in attendance. As well they ought!
I've told my folks that if anything ever happens to me, they are to cremate me, and no memorial service is to be held.
I hate this religion.

Current elder explains the college situation to me
by changeling inwhile he says he has not seen a letter ,he tells me that at the last visit the co told his body of elders pretty much what is being said here on jwd.. he gave some examples: .
1- if a young ms/pioneer, attends college and lives at home, would he and his elder dad be deleted?
the young man is "spiritually focused".. 2- an elder's daughter attends college in the hopes of having a good job in the future and dad promotes this course of action.

<sarcasm> Well, what's wrong with all of you?! Don't you know that if you're female, you're inferior, the "weaker vessel," created as only as an afterthought, created for a man, an emotional mess with the intellect of a child, and only meant to be submissive? Education for females?! Bah! The only work fit for us is 1) submission to men, 2) the bOrg, 3) the drudgery of pioneering, and 4) scullery maids. </sarcasm>
Sorry to go on a feminist toot there. Actually no I'm not. This is one aspect of the JWs and all other Abrahamic faiths that really turn my stomach; i.e. the "role" of women.
